The Vibe of a Room That Just Felt Off...

How energy shapes our spaces more than we think

How energy shapes our spaces more than we think

I have always believed that we are energetic beings and we are connected to the universe on a grander scale we can imagine - and as such we are influenced by its energetic state and shifts.

I have also always believed that our inner world and our outer environment are connected and intertwined – our state of mind, our emotional wellbeing is reflected in our outer environment and our everyday built environment, just like the natural environment, has a profound impact on our general wellbeing, including body, mind and spirit.

I have quite a few stories about the vibe of a room.

That palpable, almost tangible frequency you can not quite put your finger on, but you feel it. Whether it is uplifting or heavy, soothing or chaotic, I have always been sensitive to these energetic signatures.

So here is one of those stories...

A few years ago, I moved into a new apartment. It was not my dream home - I was not particularly excited about it. It was a garden flat, and while garden apartments can be charming, this one lacked natural light. It felt... off.

Especially one room in particular - the small spare room.

It had only two smallish windows, and the view was blocked by another building and a large tree. Not exactly an inspiring sight. To make things worse, one of the walls was angled due to being under the entrance stairs of the building, which made the room feel oddly compressed. The whole room was dim, gloomy, and the air, the energy felt heavy. I tried my best to decorate it with what I had - it was only a temporary home anyway - but no matter what I did, the room felt unwelcoming.

It was not a design issue.

It was the energy.

Even just standing at the doorway, looking in, there was this unpleasant coldness to it. You did not need to step inside to feel it. I avoided that room as much as I could - even though it was technically the most practical space to do my workouts without knocking anything over. But I just could not bring myself to spend time in there. It was draining, demotivating. Mostly, it ended up being the spare room for the occasional overnight guest.

Poor guests… 😅

Then, 2–3 months later, something changed. I started using the room for wellbeing sessions - Access Bars, reiki, massages -both giving and receiving. Not because I wanted to, but because there was simply no other space suitable for these practices. I did not expect anything to shift. I just made do.

But bit by bit, the energy of the room began to change.

It started to feel more open.

Warmer.

More welcoming.

That cold, heavy atmosphere slowly dissolved. The room even looked brighter, somehow. I had not changed the layout or the lighting. What changed was how the room was used - the intention, the energy exchange, the purpose.

That made all the difference.

It was a powerful reminder for me - that while design absolutely influences how we experience a space, it is the energy we bring into it that shapes it most profoundly.

Our presence matters.

Our rituals matter.

How we use our spaces matters.
