Happy Starts at Home...
Change Your Space, Transform Your Life - a book by Rebecca West
Another book that totally speaks my mind. The way how Rebecca West sees, thinks and feels about 'home' is so much the way I do.
She says "Being happy at home is not about having a Pinterest-perfect space or expensive furnishing. It is about having a home that works for you, supports your dreams, and helps you feel secure." So true. In my design approach this is a pivotal point - to design your home, your everyday environment around you, your needs, your preferences, your dreams and visions. The design style is almost second. But just almost. As it is perfectly possible to have the cake and eat it - have a stylish, 'picture perfect' home that serves and supports you in every way. And I would not be a true interior designer in my heart if I said the 'look' of your home is just second to the 'feel' of your home.
Happy Starts at Home is more than just another fancy interior design book. As a matter of fact, it is more like a workbook - a beautifully photographed, high quality one - full of with activities and exercises not only in relation to your home but to yourself as well. The activities help you assess your relationship with your home and basically with yourself and with each exercise you can become more aware of how you can improve not only your home but your life as well.
It contains lots of activities I myself use in my design psychology coaching. The very first one is the typical basic exercise of every coaching practice: the wheel of life - assessing which areas of your life are working well and which ones need attention and support. And then it connects the dots between the different areas of your life and your home and looks into different practical ways as to how your home can support these areas.
If you like this kind of approach of interior design where you can bridge your own personal wellness and your home by digging deeper than just what goes with what, how to furnish a room or what colour to paint your walls, then you will find this book very useful and insightful. It will show you how to connect with your space and what changes you can make in your home to feel more joyful and healthier in your skin.
It is very 'easygoing' in terms of language, easy to understand and follow, the activities are not complicated at all and are actually fun to do. Not to mention that from design perspective the book is beautifully executed - hard cover, quality paper and beautiful images.
I cannot stress this enough that investing into your home is investing into yourself. That it is design from the inside to outside - you are the core stating point.
If you feel curious to learn how you can use your home as a 'tool' to your benefit to live a good and quality life through simple but effective practical activities this book is your best friend.
